Friday My Town Shoot Out: Incongruous

I chose this week's topic. It may have been one of those ideas that sounded good, but was difficult to execute.

"Incongruous: meaning out of place, ridiculous, inconsistent, contradictory. Things mis-labeled or not where you would expect to see them, just odd stuff that you might be used to seeing everyday and we would find interesting or amusing."

I got the idea from this boat parked in front of a barn. It has obviously not been moved in a while. We are at least 60 miles from any size body of water.

I live in a small Northwest Kansas town. Last week a water tower was being added to boost the water pressure in a newly expanded area. I didn't get to see how they do it, but evidently they erect these things from the ground up, because it was missing a "Y" on the bottom.

You wouldn't expect to see palm trees in this flat arid country, but the Chamber of Commerce is using a slogan "Oasis on the Plains" and this truck stop complex calls it's self "The Oasis." The trees are constructed out of metal and I believe fiberglass. I know there was concern about those branches breaking loose in one of our 70 mph winds.

- complete with parrots.(click for a better view)

Another thing you don't expect to see everyday is a real semi-truck suspended so high in the sky that it can be see for miles.

Lastly a bonus from my trip this week. It comes from Pratt, Kansas. How's this for a town with a sense of humor? If you zoom in on the "hot" you can see the gingerbread detail around the top.

I love the theme. And I don't know which is better (or worse), the ersatz trees or the flat parrots. Clever idea, delightful post.

I love that truck stop, with its fake palms full of fake parrots, and the wires every which way to keep them there. Definitely on my list for a stop the next time I'm driving through your crazy state.

How wonderful, those parrots! The truck is awesome.

Thanks for the tour of your town and the great photos. And, the assignment, of course.

All of the stuff in these photos is amusing and quirky, but the new "COLB" water tower is the one that tickles me the most. Good choice for a theme.

Mary,
Thank you for thinking of "incongrous" as a theme for this week. It was so much fun getting the shoot out together! I like the way you started with a landlocked boat and ended with the water (even if it was in a couple of sexy towers). Those towers are so funny! I cannot believe the mirage ( fake palms and flat parrots)! Have a wonderful weekend, Mary!

As usual, you did a great job, Mary. I guess they're still building the water tower and have the y to put up yet? lol

Good theme that made us all think. Palm trees in Kansas! If they didn't have all those guy lines and parrots, I might have been fooled by them!

Nice "colb" water tower. I guess they didn't plan out how much tower it would take to fit the whole name :) Very funny palm trees. Good try, Kansas. Good try.

It's quite a hard time for me to find incongruous things around my town. Your assigned photo theme is challenging. And your set of photos are really perfect! I love it all. Congrats! Thanks to you

Mary, I wasn't thinking kind thoughts about you last week as I searched for the incongruous. But that has changed now, it was a terrific theme! I think this has been the most diverse shoot out so far! Love your COLB water tower and the plastic parrots!!

I really enjoyed this week's challenge. Thank you, Mary.

p.s. I used a landlocked boat, too - but not as landlocked as yours!

I think everyone got freaked by the word not the idea - cause the blogs have been great this week.
I clicked to enlarge the water towers and at the base beside the 'doorman' vet clinic is a camper and a sail boat, also a bit off is what looks like a metal desk just sitting there... great photo.

I've never seen water towers with such personality. They look like the tin man and his misses!

Great shootout Mary, and a good theme. After seeing yours, I realize I didn't work my brain hard enough. We have palm trees like yours here in Billings. And as a native from Kansas I've seen the Pratt water towers, but I'd forgotten them. Did you know Canton KS (just east of McPherson) has Hot and Cold water towers too? I wonder which had them first. You did a good job with the theme! Thanks for suggesting it.
