That Long Lonesome Road

I alluded to my photo safari a few days ago. The area I explored consisted of large ranches and farms. Not very many people live in that area, anymore. Many roads have road markers, but they are little more than tracks between two fields. I took one of those and had to turn around after a mile because it didn't intersect with any other road. Some of the roads cut through a large ranch and I had to cross numerous cattle guards. I also turned around on the road pictured below. Looking in the rear view mirror, it occurred to me that no one else had used this road in the past few days. So,it was unlikely there would be anything to see. I like the bright spot of road at the top of the picture. The sun was shining through a hole in the clouds.

I like taking side roads to find out where they go. I try to stay on "maintained" dirt roads, but I've been known to go down some questionable ones, too. I was always afraid there would not be a place to actually turn around. Now, armed with a cell phone, I do feel a bit safer, but I have to remember that areas without service DO exist!

Your picture is a great visual of the "road less travelled."

Wow - what a terrific photo. I love to get out in the "country" and find a stretch like this. I always enjoy seeing the terrain all around you there. Hope you have a great Sunday.

Sounds like a fun adventure. Love the photo-seems so open and wide to me-something I'm not used to seeing-neat!

I've often explored like you did, and many times had to turn around when I discovered a road got too gnarly to continue... like you mentioned, oftentimes they are just a pass-thru between fields of crops.

Love your header of sunflowers!! :)

Great photo, Mary. I love it. Makes me SO homesick for the wide open spaces of NW KS!

Now that to me is Heaven. Land and more land for miles around. What a beautiful photo.

Great picture of the road. In North Dakota that's considered a four lane highway!
