Memory Lane

I was reading Far Side of Fifty's account of her EMT career. It brought back a memory that I had forgotten. I worked in communications from the time I was 16 until I retired. I was always on call and many nights the phone rang at 3 a.m. My habit in the winter was to tuck my nightgown into my sweats, pull on my snow boots, don a stocking hat and my down coat and go to the office. After all, I wasn't going to see anyone but the local cop on patrol. It saved time, I could fix the trouble and be back home most nights in under an hour and go back to bed. That all changed one night when things were more complicated and not resolved very quickly. My boss came down to the office for some reason or other. I tell you I got really, really warm working with my coat on until he left! Needless to say, I started putting a sweatshirt over my night gown after that.

I am self-conscious just stepping outside in my robe to get the morning paper!

That reminds me of when my son was young and in school. Some mornings if I were running behind, I'd drive him to school in my nightgown and robe. I was always so afraid I might get pulled over for some reason. Fortunately, that never happened!

I can imagine you were hot.
One thing I love about living way out in the middle of nowhere with no neighbors within sight is... I can go out with whatever I am wearing at the time.
Good story.
Have a great day.

In re of ga.farmwoman's comment, that's the one thing I miss most about living in town verses the country, always having to dress before I go outside! No taking the trash out at night in my nightie, or taking my dog out for a late night "bizness trip" in my nightie. Yes, isolation has it's perks! ;-)

Hi Mary! I found you! Nice to meet you. Thanks for leaving me your blogspot address on Area Voices! I also blog the same blog on blogspot..cause I would hate for either of them to become defunct and shut down like AOL. I have found lovely women and writers on both sites! And now I have found you too! I am going to add you to my favorites list! Oh ya, I live in the boonies, and as a crazy lady over fifty almost anything is normal! One very early morning at a car accident I gave my coat to the victim, I just said "Sorry guys, she needs it more than me, and if you haven't seen an old nightgown by now..it is about time" :)
