How Dare They!
You know how you think of what you should have said when it's too late? I have to blog this incident to get it out of my mind or I'll keep stewing about it. Silly, I know. A census worker came to my door last evening to verify my address. She told me they had a hard time finding me and I should think about displaying my address in case someone wanted to find me. Like the spineless worm that I am, I just nodded. After she left, I thought,"Who are you, the address police?" Why didn't I say, "I've lived here for 30 years and the people I want to see know where I live or they'll call and ask for directions." It's really the truth. I can't think of any good reason to display my address. The fire, ambulance and sheriff know where I live. I'm the only house on the road. Are rural homes in your area marked with addresses?

About ten years ago, the County Commissioners made sure that all roads in the county had "street signs" and that every residence had an address number on the entry gate. It has made things easier for fire and emergency personnel because the area is being sub-divided so much.
Honestly, I've never paid attention in our rural areas to see if they're marked or not. I know someone comes around each year wanting us to pay them to paint our street address on the curb, so it can easily be seen by rescue personnel. The big, black, bold numbers on our mailbox at the curb should suffice, I say, so I always send them on their merry way, minus my money.
Yep, we have been forced to put our 911 address on our mail box so the emergency personal can find us. If you don't have it posted they will come do it for you...
I'm like you I've been here over 30 yrs, the ones I care about knows were to find me. Big Brother tells us when to go to the bath room now adays.
It's a state law here that our addresses are to be posted . . . in a certain size numeral. I think it's 3" minimum, and reflective, and on a dark background. So as to comply with the law a few years ago we put out a post with a green-painted wood oval and brass numbers. The green paint's worn off and the brass is tarnished.
I wish some government worker would have done it (and would maintain it) for us!
Our address is on our mailbox, even though we are out in the stix all by ourselves. I have no idea if it's law or not, I would assume it is.
I'm like you... I often think of what I SHOULD have said hours after the fact. Doh.
