In my forties, I resisted being called middle-aged. Now that I'm well into my fifties, I realize that I missed middle-age. After all, I doubt that I will live to be a hundred. So, where does that leave me? I'm not considered a senior citizen in most restaurants. Am I elderly?

I remember one of the grandkids telling mother when she had her 50th, "YOU ARE HALF A HUNDRED TODAY!" I guess we are only as old as we feel, and some days I feel 120!
Well, since I hit 60, I realize the 50s were the very best. I love every day, and look forward to the next. I know I am well past the middle of my life, but also can hardly wait to see what is ahead.
I worked in nursing homes a lot, and took care of 50 year old patients that acted 100, and took care of 90 year olds that acted 40. It is all what you make of it.
Age has never been a big deal for me. I can't change anything, so I am what I am.
Would I go back to any particular age? No way. I just try to enjoy where I am -- wrinkles, white hair, flabby arms and all. :o)
No not elderly..yet, you need a walker, or a cane, and black shoes and cardigan sweaters in all colors to be elderly..isn't that a rule..if not I now declare it a rule! :)
I was much the same way. I resisted being called middle-aged in my forties, too. To me (then), middle-aged was 'old'. I'd thought of my parents as being middle-aged for many years by then, and to me, they were old. I still remember when my mom really burst my bubble one day by assuring me that unless I thought I'd likely live in to be in my hundreds, that I was indeed middle-aged!
I guess we who are in our 50's, but don't yet qualify for senior discounts are tweeners...or would that be 'tweniors'? ;-Þ
I'm with Nancy...I yam what I yam! I remember at church finally realizing they DID need to change the sign on our door from Young Adult Class to Median Adult. It was a big day.
No, you didn't miss middle age. You're in it NOW, as am I. I always thought of middle age as when a person got comfortable enough to be whatever they were without faking it, and that's where I am.
Ergo, I am middle-aged.
I'm ONLY 48 and I'm already receiving notices from AARP wanting me to join their illustrious organization... wait a minute, I thought you had to be at least 50 to be eligible for AARP benefits? Aren't they grabbing for my $$ a bit too early?!
Love your blog, your travelling, your work with Habitat... you go gurl! Very inspiring. Hope you are getting your water problems under control... and um, I spoke too soon. We got 2" within an hour last night + flash flood warnings. Yuck!
